Gulf Islands Gourmet Cruise

Edible British Columbia, in conjunction with Exposure and the MV Pacific Yellowfin, is very excited to be able to offer our clients a unique opportunity to explore BC's scenic Gulf Islands in the comfort of one BC's most unique and well outfitted yachts.

Few active travel companies visit the Gulf Islands by private expedition yacht, and none can boast one as stellar as the M. V. Pacific Yellowfin. The Yellowfin is a 115-foot yacht that was originally built in 1943 and has since been lovingly restored to the tune of more than $15 million by Captain Colin Griffinson. Discover the cozy warmth of gleaming mahogany and the traditional design of ocean-view staterooms. Indigenous Pacific Northwest Douglas fir forms the table in the main salon where guests can recount their daily adventures with friends and family over a glass of wine. The Pacific Yellowfin blends seamlessly with its natural environs as she incorporates all elements of West Coast culture in her presentation and services. The Yellowfin has four staterooms and sleeps 8 guests comfortably (perfectly suited for up to 4 couples), but can accommodate groups as large as 12 (ideal for families or close friends).

As with all Edible BC culinary tours, the focus of the trip is on the food and wine, and with Chef Catherine Cafiti in the galley, you will have one of the best dining experiences of your life! In addition to incredible food and wine, there are numerous activities to keep you busy. Water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, hiking, swimming, kayaking, mountain biking, motor scooters, power boating and more are available for your use!

SAMPLE ITINERARY - GULF ISLANDS

DAY ONE - GALIANO ISLAND

We’ll meet at our downtown rendezvous on Waterfront Road to board our Turbo Otter seaplane. The twenty-minute flight over to the Gulf Islands provides a magnificent bird’s-eye view of Vancouver, the Strait of Georgia and the 200-plus islands that form this magical chain (and their American neighbours, the San Juans). We’ll arrive right to the doorstep of the M. V. Pacific Yellowfin at Galiano Island. With a population of under a thousand, Galiano is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the Gulf Islands. You may think so too once you feast your eyes on Montague Harbour, a gorgeous 97-hectare Marine Park with lush forests, meadows, and a network of beautiful, romantic walks. You’ll be greeted by Captain Colin and his crew with a champagne toast and escorted to your private staterooms, all tastefully decorated with mahogany design and equipped with DVD players and ensuite bathrooms. After some time to refresh and explore the boat’s premises, we’ll go for a cruise ashore in one of the runabout tenders to hike through the park and explore the pristine white shell beaches. Look for cormorants, oystercatchers, starfish and invertebrate life that can be found in the many tidal pools.

For dinner, chef Catherine will begin your culinary experience with a menu that blends West Coast flavours paired with award-winning BC wines. A sample menu might include:

Fresh BC Oyster Degustation

White Wine Steamed Local Clams and Mussels

Scallop Ceviche w/ Cucumber Water and Fish Roe

Lobster and Wild BC Salmon Confit served with Corn Purée, Roasted Cauliflower and Sea Asparagus

Homemade Lemon Pound Cake

Keep in mind, every trip is tailored to the guests on board, and with our detailed customer profile, the weekends menus will feature many of your favorite foods and wines.

After dinner, you may choose to stay up and socialize on the main deck or retire to your stateroom and let the waves rock you to sleep. Tomorrow the real fun begins!

Included Meals: Lunch & Dinner as well as cocktails and snacks
Accommodation: Luxury Stateroom aboard the MV Yellowfin

DAY TWO - SATURNA ISLAND

Today you’ll awake to a delicious breakfast while the crew pulls anchor to leave Galiano for Salt Spring Island:

Champagne Mimosa

Fruit Skewer

Yogurt Granola with Spice Syrup

Truffle Scrambled Eggs Spinach and Potato Cake

Maple Bacon

Blueberry Waffles with Mint Whip Cream

Captain Colin is adept at spotting wildlife on the horizon and will enlighten us while we’re underway. Salt Spring is the largest of the islands, with a population of over 10,000, and has of late become a something of a destination for the rich and famous.

The marina at Ganges Harbour is a lively hub that has become famous for the highly popular outdoor Farmer’s Market held every Saturday in the summertime. It’s a great place to meet local artists, crafts people and vegetable growers as well as to explore the many bakeries, coffee shops, ice cream parlours, and boutiques.

Lunch will be served on the outside deck at a unique table that rests on a set of spare propellers:

Oyster Chowder Braised Herbs

Leek and Roasted Fennel Watercress Salad

Crispy Skin Seared Salmon

Grilled Ahi Tuna

This afternoon we’ll relocate the Yellowfin across the sound as we set sail for Saturna Island. En route we stop at a secret spot to set a string of crab traps. Saturna is the second-largest of the archipelago, and with a population of just 300, is the epitome of “unspoiled.”

After securing the anchorage in Lyall Harbour, we’ll have an opportunity to cruise in one of the tenders to nearby South Pender Island to hike the trails of Mount Norman.

Return for a much-deserved sunset cocktail before sitting down to another perfectly-prepared, fresh west coast dinner matched with another great collection of BC wines. We encourage you to watch chef Catherine who just loves demonstrating how to best prepare the day’s seafood catch:

Cured Salmon in Citrus

Beet and Orange Salad

Baked Sablefish, Spinach and Herb Purée w/ Saffron, Vanilla Prawn Sauce Vierge

Coffee Creme

After dinner relax aft of the main salon on the fantail deck for a nightcap and to gaze out at the stars.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner and all snacks and cocktails
Accommodation: Luxury Stateroom aboard the MV Yellowfin

DAY THREE - RETURN TO VANCOUVER

This unscheduled morning provides the perfect opportunity to paddle around the bay in one of the ocean kayaks. Come face to face with wildlife as you explore the seaside cliffs along Plumper Sound. Catch a glimpse of Saturna Island Winery, the premier wine makers in the region, which is situated on a bench of land nestled on a southerly-facing cliff, its unique climate is similar to the northern Mediterranean.

Today’s main excursion gets us out on the mountain bikes to take a ride along the Strait to East Point Regional Park. The road is very quiet, servicing only a few of the local residents, and the views onto the strait and Tumbo Island are amazing. The old lighthouse, built in 1888, overlooks impressive sandstone cliffs, ledges and outcroppings. This is a great place to get to know the unique flora of the area, which includes Douglas fir, Western Red Cedar, Garry oak, and the lovely Arbutus. We’ll continue riding towards our favourite scenic lookout for a wonderful picnic lunch:

Crab Cake Three Ways
Salmon Tartar
Poke Tuna

After lunch, we meet the Yellowfin tenders at the beach to load in the bikes and go explore the rocky islets offshore that provide rookeries for hundreds of seals and sea lions. This is also the best place on the islands to see whales. Finally, we’ll return to the Pacific Yellowfin to pack up our things and say our goodbyes.

Your Exposure guides and crew of the Pacific Yellowfin will bid you adieu when the Turbo Otter seaplanes arrive to return you to Vancouver by the middle of the afternoon.

Included Meals: Breakfast & Lunch and morning snacks
