Who – Driftwood Brewery
What – Farmhand Ale
Where – Victoria, Vancouver Island
Why – The newest kid on the craft brewery block, Driftwood opened last fall and has sent a steady stream out the brewery doors to pubs, restaurants, private lrs and bc liquor stores since. This ale was one of their original three (they currently have 5 in their lineup). Farmhand Ale is a traditional Belgian-style Saison (see BEERSPEAK). Freshly cracked pepper adds layers of complexity to this already mildly-spiced style, with tart malt, delicate and mellow fruit and fresh wheat and earth notes. Great for summer sipping when you need a brew to hold up to the grill and still be crisply refreshing.
When – Try with mussels to start, and grilled pork and thymed new potatoes for your main.
How (much) – $4.75 for 650ml
Beerspeak of the Week – According to Beer Advocate, Saisons are sturdy farmhouse ale that was traditionally brewed in the winter, to be consumed throughout the summer months. Not so long ago it was close to being an endangered style, but over recent years there’s been a massive revival amongst craft brewers. This is a very complex style; many are very fruity in the aroma and flavor. Look for earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness. Lots of spice and with a medium bitterness. They tend to be semi-dry with many only having touch of sweetness. Saisons have an average alcohol by volume (abv) range of 5.0-8.0%.
