Vancouver’ mother-daughter cheese mavens come via the well-known team of Alice and Allison Spurrell at Les Amis du Fromage. But Victoria has its own highly celebrated version, with Charelli’s mother-daughter duo Carmen Lassooij and Nicole Ingram.Their jam-packed sliver of a shop has finally burst at the seams – and moved over to the larger space next door. Take ‘larger’ with a grain of (Maldon Sea) salt though – clocking in at around 300 square feet, there are more types of cheese than square feet of space! They carry anywhere from 250-350 types of cheese at any one time, dependent upon the time of year (and are always happy to pass a sample slice over the counter to you on mini marble slabs). They also are the purveyors of many unique foodie items, guaranteed a spot on any gourmand’s shelves. Think specialty oils, fois gras, crackers, French stock and sauces, truffle products, mushrooms, salts, specialty chocolates, French cherries in brandy, real cornichons, authentic corned beef, house made pates, spreads, Vij’s frozen entrees and much more. The larger sized space will allow the ladies to better meet the demands of their growing catering services.

Next time you’re in the area, stop in (thank me later) and Cheers Charelli’s!
