Who – La Stella Winery
What – LaStellina 2008
Where – Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley
Why – Haven’t heard of this rising ‘little star’? Sister winery to acclaimed Le Vieux Pin, La Stella shares many of Pin’s shining characteristics – winemaker, vineyard manager, low yields, handcrafted and artisanal fine wines. But Le Vieux Pin is located in Oliver, while La Stella is based in Osoyoos, and the distinct terroir of their sites produces markedly different wines. LaStellina is a stunning and elegant rose, entirely of Merlot. Fresh, ripe summer strawberries and sweet spice on the nose lead to a crisp palate of apple, cinnamon, raspberry and mineral, with a delicate floral undertone. Beautifully balanced, with a fresh finish that makes you yearn for more. Too bad it’s often hard to find more – a mere 318 cases of this rose was produced.
When – I’d echo the fresh berry notes with a salad or poultry dish with cranberries, strawberries or – if you’re so lucky – pomegranate.
How (much) – $25.00
Winespeak of the Week – In the vineyards of both La Stella and Le Vieux Pin, the winemaking team employs a blend of organic and biodynamic practices, which they term ‘non-interventionism’. Along with our their own 50 acres of small parcel, prime vineyards they also contract organically and sustainably grown grapes from the area. I mentioned above their yields are quite low – this is to help concentrate the flavours and complexities in the fruit. Quality over quantity if you will. Their average yield is 2 tons per acre – for some of wines as low as 1 ton per acre. Comparatively, you’ll often find 4-8 tons per acre yields used with quantity focused producers.
