Who – Hester Creek Estate Winery
What – Trebbiano 2007
Where – Golden Mile, Okanagan
Why – I’m wary of recommending a wine that is sold out at the winery (check your local specialty shop), but this special white is on my mind (and tongue!) this week so I made an exception. At Whistler’s Cornucopia this weekend, on the Viking Stage, Edible BC Chef Guide Gurj Dhaliwal will be presenting Indian inspired, BC based bites and we will be pairing this special wine with his dishes. Gurj was the winner of Food Network’s 2007 Superstar Chef Challenge, and his flavourful food is a perfect match for this aromatic, spicy wine. Aromas of floral honeysuckle and white peach are echoed on the palate, joined with rich tropical flavours of mandarin, passionfruit and pear. The smooth sipper finishes slightly off dry.
When – With spicy cuisine, Asian and Indian flavours, light poultry, camembert and fresh fruit desserts. And if you want to see for yourself, come visit us Sunday at 12:30.
How (much) – $19.09 at private stores (if you can find it!). Sold out at Winery – only 353 cases produced
Winespeak of the Week – Though very rare in these parts (Hester Creek is the only BC winery producing it), Trebbiano is a grape variety that makes more white wine in the world than any other. It gives good yields, and when not over cropped can be fresh and fruity. Its high acidity makes it important in Cognac production. It is also commonly known as Ugni Blanc.
