ORGANIC ISLANDS FESTIVAL & SUSTAINABILITY EXPO

June 30th, 2008 Write a Comment Print This Post Print This Post

Canada’s largest outdoor ‘green’ festival is taking place July 5th & 6th in Victoria.  Local, slow, natural, inspiring, hip, the 4th annual Organic Islands Festival and Sustainability Expo is a rallying community-based event providing a look at the who’s who in the green community. With over 100 exhibits, interactive displays, presentations, natural food demos, entertainment, and children’s activities, this green think tank has more than enough activities to fill the two day event. Thousands of green enthusiasts will descend upon Glendale Gardens to rub shoulders with sustainability visionaries and eco community leaders while enjoying fine organic foods, fair-trade beverages and live music.

The Festival’s motto is Live Green. Do Good. We’ll show you how!  Exhibitors are from BC’s backyard, like Nature’s Path Foods, and from further afield, like Sebastopol’s Guayaki Yerba Mate.  Panel discussions include Saturday morning’s expert food producers’ panel discussion on Farming in Urban Neighborhoods (F.U.N.) – demonstrating how farming organically is accessible to urban and suburban residents.  The festival favourite Organic Libations tasting event will feature BC’s award-winning organic wines from Summerhill Pyramid Winery and Lotusland Vineyards, unique organic coolers from Totally Organic Beverages, and delicious cider from Sea Cider. And for foodies, in celebration of Vancouver Island’s local bounty, the festival also features demonstrations by renowned Chef Bill Jones from Deerholme Farm in the Cowichan Valley and Victoria’s green caterer – The Good for You Gourmet, Laura Moore.  So Live Green.  Do Good.  They’ll show you how.

TABLELAND TAKES NYC

June 29th, 2008 Write a Comment Print This Post Print This Post

Director Craig Noble’s Tableland just took home the award for Best Feature Film in the New York City Food Film Festival. The screenings were outside on the Water Taxi Beach in Queens, against a Manhattan back drop. Craig had a great time at the annual festival, and he’s now fielding interest for more NY state screenings.  The festival is a multi-sensory experience where filmgoers are able to watch food films, then sample the food portrayed in those films. Featured stars included pizza, Philly cheese steak, BBQ and, of course, Tableland – paired with a Vegan Feast prepared by acclaimed vegan chef Matteo.  Craig’s sustainable food documentary closed the festival on a beautiful NYC night, with over 600 people in attendance.  Congrats to Craig!

Your menu may items include Pacific Sable Fish served with a Warm Pemberton Potato Salad, Fine Beans and Purple Mustard Vinaigrette, and Olive Oil Poached Lamb served with a Summer Bean Cassoulet with Lamb Shank, Oven Dried Tomato and Smoked Bacon Jus.

Most recently, Owen-Mold was the Chef de Cuisine at the Elixir at Vancouver’s Opus Hotel.

Wherever he has worked however, it has been fundamentally important to him to cook in season and build relationships with local food producers. He dedicates significant time to scouring the local farmer’s markets and talking to local producers in an effort to build important relationships where they can help each other.  Julian oversees the menu at JC’s Deli, a casual eatery featuring fine food, desserts and coffee, the Lakeside Lounge, and Jordan’s Crossing.

The 77-suite Nita Lake Lodge is Whistler’s newest boutique hotel. Nestled on the shores of Nita Lake steps away from Whistler’s Creekside, the luxurious Nita Lake Lodge reflects the highest level of style, comfort, service and pure indulgence.

WOKKING WITH LOCAL PRODUCE – by Stephanie Yuen

June 29th, 2008 Write a Comment Print This Post Print This Post

Authentic Chinese cuisine has taken on a new course at Shun Feng Seafood Restaurant, the first Chinese restaurant of its kind to launch a ‘Wokking with Local Produce Menu’ not too long ago.  The 9-course dinner, paired with three BC wines: Jackson Triggs Viognier; Colona Sauvignon Opal and Inniskillin Pinot Noir and Pu-erh tea is available till mid July for $65 each. The pride and joy of organic produce from Fraser Valley and fresh seafood from BC waters are presented scrumptiously: Thinly sliced geoduck with Sea Cucumber stir-fried with Chinese chives and Silver-tooth sprouts; Drunken Flambe Spot Prawns, Roasted Mt. Leman Squabs; Dungeness Crab steamed with Egg White and BC Pinot Blanc and Pan-fried Black Cod with a basil lime yogurt; just to name a few. My favourite? The drunken Spot Prawns served table side with prawns dancing and flame ablaze is both a show and a culinary amazement.  Tea lovers will find the Pu-erh tea soothing and very interesting.  Pu-erh is a strong black tea, enjoyed by many after dinner for it helps digestion and has a cleansing and settling power. The tea comes in a cake form which is an ancient way to carry and transport tea by pressing the tealeaves together to form into round shapes.  Some tea cakes resemble a small dish or a lid; others look like a thick pizza. Drinkers simply break off a tiny piece from the tea cake and simply add hot water to make tea. Shun Feng Seafood Restaurant
